Why Manassas is a railroad town

Manassas grew up around a junction where two railroads met. That junction is a big reason the town, and the battles, happened here at all.

Before it was a city, Manassas was a junction: the point where the Orange and Alexandria Railroad met the Manassas Gap Railroad. That crossing of rail lines made the area strategically important in the Civil War and gave the town its start afterward.

Trains still define downtown today. The historic depot sits in the middle of Historic Downtown, and passenger trains stop right in the center of town.
